Mathew Barnes (b. 1973, Kansas City, Mo.)Oakland-based artist, Mathew Barnes has been honing his painting skills in various styles and subject matters over the course of a decade. In 2016 he relocated to California from Texas and fell in love with its charming coastal communities, rugged coastlines, spectacular redwoods, and epic granite. This sparked his fascination with nature and in the animals that claim these terrains as home.

North pays homage to the survival, endurance, and nature’s instinctual wisdom that allows it to thrive in challenging environments. There are lessons to be learned from nature. In this series, I hope that viewers will pause, reflect on their own journeys in this complex world we’re lucky to inhabit and be grateful.
